Which is the best method?

Probably steam cleaning as it flushes out the soil from the carpet fibres and, when cleaned correctly, the carpet is also rinsed in the process. However, advances in carpet dry cleaning processes have meant that the difference in results between modern steam cleaning and dry cleaning is negligable.
